ADMISSION TO THE DEGREE COURSE

Entry criteria: Minimum entry criteria of 200-240 UCAS tariff points – Minimum entry criteria of 80 – 96 points.

OR pass at Foundation course/ Access programme (Level 3) or BTEC

OR pass at 2 A-Levels or 4 AS Levels

GCSE English, Grade C or above, or equivalent BTEC

For the level 6 one year Degree Course, students must have achieved a BA(Hons) level qualification or equivalent.

Students are required to pass a practical audition.

Minimum English language requirements:Level 2 English or equivalent. Overseas students are required to pass the IELTS at 6.5 or the TOEFL equivalent.

SUMMARY OF THE COURSE

Our Degree Course is a three-year full-time course designed to give high quality professional level practical training towards achieving professional standard Musical Theatre performance. Delivered at Millennium Performing Arts and validated by The University for the Creative Arts, on successful completion of the course you will graduate with all the practical, artistic and academic skills to pursue a career in the competitive world of Musical Theatre performance.

The Course centres on an exacting programme of professional work-based practice, taught by highly experienced industry professionals, who also have expertise for teaching and developing skills in students, thereby meeting the demands of professional practice at the highest levels. At the end of year one, the student chooses to focus their studies on Singing/Acting or Dance as major subjects.

 

SUBJECTS AT MILLENNIUM PERFORMING ARTS

Year One Dance: Technique 1

This Unit introduces you to dance. It is divided into genre-based dance modules; they are designed to introduce you to the skills, knowledge and understanding which will equip you to start to undertake a performance career in Musical Theatre Performance. The specialist technical areas covered are Classical Ballet, Jazz Dance and Contemporary Dance and all associated genres and styles relating to Musical Theatre dance.

Year One Acting & Singing: Technique 1

This unit introduces you to the practice of acting and singing. You will develop the skill of using the voice effectively in both singing and the spoken word. At this level you will gain a fundamental understanding of technical practice in singing and acting, where private practice is an essential element of this area of study.

Year One Professional Studies 1

In this unit you will be introduced to the generic skills and understanding you will need to sustain a successful career as a performer. Body Management covers the aspect of health and fitness for professional dance. Reflective Practice allows you to reflect upon your learning in terms of your personal and professional development.

Year One Performance Studies 1

A Performance Workshop module allows you to develop your craft through creative workshops and rehearsals of set work. In Live Performance you have the opportunity to participate in performances. A study of the history of Musical Theatre, within Contextual Studies, complements the practical study in the unit. At this level you will gain a fundamental understanding of performance practice through practical workshops and live performance.

 

Year Two Technique 2

The specialist technical areas covered continue to be Dance, Singing and Acting and within those genres are a variety of dance styles, singing styles and acting techniques. You will further develop your understanding of technical practice, technical proficiency and the requirements of professional standards. An elective option at level 5 allows you to select extra study in one of the three technical areas, refining skills in the chosen genre.

Year Two Dance Strand Technique 2

This unit is divided into genre-based modules which are designed to provide you with the skills, knowledge and understanding which will equip you to undertake a performance career as a dancer in Musical Theatre Performance. The technical aspects covered are Dance and Voice work including a range of styles and genres within each area. You will continue to further develop your understanding of technical practice, technical proficiency and the requirements of professional standards. An elective option at level 5 allows you to select extra study in an additional genre, thus extending your versatility as a dance performer.

Year Two Professional Studies 2

The Unit comprises two equally weighted assessments that give you the generic skills and understanding to sustain a successful career as a performer. Professional Development Portfolio covers aspects of Musical Theatre production, self-management and employment skills. Reflective

Practice allows you to reflect upon their learning in terms of your personal and professional development.

The Unit comprises two equally weighted assessments that give you the generic skills and understanding to sustain a successful career as a performer. Professional Development Portfolio covers aspects of Musical Theatre production, self-management and employment skills. Reflective

Practice allows you to reflect upon their learning in terms of your personal and professional development.

Year Two Performance Studies 2

A Performance Workshop module allows you to continue to further develop your craft through creative workshops and rehearsals of set work. In Live Performance you have the opportunity to refine skills and knowledge through the creation of a solo performance. A study of a major Musical Theatre artist complements the practical study in the unit. At this level you build upon a fundamental understanding of performance practice, expanding your knowledge and experience, through practical workshops, live performance, and contextual study.

Year Two Dance Strand Performance Studies 2

A Performance Workshop module allows you to continue to further develop your craft through creative workshops and rehearsals of set work. In Live Performance you have the opportunity to refine skills and knowledge through the creation of a solo performance. You will undertake studies of the choreographic process to support your awareness and understanding in this unit. A study of a major Dance Artist, within Contextual Studies complements the practical study in the unit. At this level you build upon a fundamental understanding of dance performance practice, expanding your knowledge and experience, through practical workshops and live performance.

 

Year Three Technique 3 (Audition Technique)

The specialist technical areas covered remain Dance, Singing and Acting and within those genres are a variety of dance styles, singing styles and acting techniques. You will also choose an elective option in one genre, further refining skills in that technical discipline. At this level you will develop your technical skills and apply them creatively and intelligently to technical practice at an advanced level in readiness for undertaking auditions in order to enter the profession.

 Year Three Dance Strand Technique 3

The Unit is divided into genre-based modules designed to provide you with the skills, knowledge and understanding which will equip you to undertake a successful career as a dancer in Musical Theatre or other Theatre Performance. The technical areas covered are Dance and Voice work, building on the skills developed in Year 2. Your Voice Work will be concerned with developing musicianship for singing in ensembles; more advanced acting skills and mastering effective voice production through use of the spoken word. You will also choose an elective option in an additional dance genre, further extending your skills and gaining additional versatility in your dance expertise. At this level you will develop technical skills and apply them creatively and intelligently to technical practice at an advanced level in readiness for undertaking auditions in order to enter the profession.

Year Three Performance Studies 3

A Performance Workshop module allows you to develop your craft to a professional level through the rehearsal of pieces for performance, as a simulated work experience. In Live Performance students have the opportunity to further refine skills and knowledge through the creation of a solo performance. A Performance Portfolio records and evaluates the development and performance of the solo. At this level you will be working towards a professional understanding of performance practice, expanding your knowledge and experience through rehearsals and live performance, and critical reflection on practice.

Year Three Dance Strand Performance Studies 3

A Performance Workshop module allows you to develop your craft to a professional level through the rehearsal of dance pieces for performance, as a simulated work experience. In Live Performance students have the opportunity to further refine skills and knowledge through the creation of a solo performance. A Performance Portfolio records and evaluates the development and performance of the solo.  At this level you will be working towards a professional understanding of dance performance practice, expanding your knowledge and experience through rehearsals and live performance, choreography and critical reflection on practice.

Year Three and Year Three Dance Professional Studies 3

In this Unit you will create a Major Project based on an aspect of professional practice. You will engage in research and investigation into Musical Theatre performance relevant to your own career aspirations.
